SKA (Square Kilometre Array) Talk
The Janjira Habsani Educational and Social Society will be hosting a talk by Dr Bernie Fanaroff on the SKA (Square Kilometre Array) on Monday, 20 May 2013 at the Rylands Civic Hall at 19h30. The talk is open to grade 11 and 12 high school students and engineering university students as well as any other interested persons.
Dr Fanaroff, the Project Director of the SKA South Africa Project will speak about the Square Kilometre Array radio telescope including the MeerKAT telescope, which is one of the biggest science and engineering projects in South Africa. The SKA therefore represents an unrivalled opportunity for the development of very high level skills and expertise in Africa. This will allow Africa to be a significant contributor to the global knowledge economy.
The South African SKA Project has initiated a targeted “Youth into Science and Engineering Programme” to develop highly skilled young scientists and engineers. The SKA South Africa Project has awarded close to 400 grants (2012) for studies in astronomy and engineering from undergraduate to post-doctoral level, while also investing in training programmes for technicians.
