Limpopo Info Session

iMonday, May 26th, 2014 comments by jamielee

A beautiful yet chilly day on the 10th May 2014marked theAnnual Info Session which was the ripened fruits of the hardwork and determination over the last few months of the Limpopo GirlEng team.  I can say we were all keen and nervous at the same time, as this was the first time in the history of GirlEng Limpopo tackled a different district – Vhembe District the “Great Venda”.

The team was warmly welcomed with open arms by Thohoyandou (Elephants heads)as we arrived at Thohoyandou Technical High School tomeet the” Born Free Generation”- our future engineers. Punctual as ever in their school uniform, flying high and proudly representing, the girls showed100% ambition, readiness and pure determinationto acquire new knowledge. The girls who gathered were so co-operative and well behaved, a key indication of a home instilled African Ubuntu foundation.

The event kick started with Eunice Ramuthivheli, our proudly home grown Logistic Coordinator & Civil Engineer, who begun the journey with the girls by sharing inspirational stories and day-to-day encounters of varsity students to offer the girls expert advice through personal experience. Our female speakers took the platform presenting the various engineering disciplines. I must applaud the Vhembe District girlsfor the 100% attentiveness they showed as they focused their minds and absorbed all the information and knowledge they could. Our highlight of the day was the only male speaker who represented the Built Environment (Town & Regional Planner), Mr SandileMbetse.

Presenting to around 275 girls can be intimidating, but Sandile conducted an outstanding presentation which encouragedthe girls to pursue a career in this still, very male-dominated industry. Many questions were asked and prizes were handed out to the girls who were spontaneous and participated actively throughout the day (Winners are in the pictures below). It was an amazing day to share with the girls and without any doubt we as the GirlEng Limpopo Team were proud to host these futureengineers on this day.

The team is preparing for our next Info Session. Keep your eyes peeled on www.womeng.org for more details.
