SAWomEng hosted the first networking cocktail function for Johannesburg in October 2013.

The @Network Division of SAWomEng aims to provide a platform for professionals working within the engineering and associated disciplines to network, collaborate and be inspired.

The theme of “Engineering Africa” was explored in a panel debate led by Vanessa Perumal, a pioneer in the South African media environment. Guest speakers included Simon Smith, the Unilever Vice President for the Africa Cluster; Ory Okolloh, the director of investments for Omidyar Network Africa and Carlman Moyo, the regional director for DuPont Sub-Saharan Africa.

Key points of the debate included an exploration into how Africa is being engineered, the opportunities available for business development and how businesses can grow into new markets. This initiated enthusiastic discussion by the rest of the attendees during the networking session that followed.

Feedback from the event was hugely positive. Attendees were inspired and motivated by the potential of the South African engineering community to grow both the country and continent, and are keen to find ways to make a difference in the African Engineering landscape through collaboration and innovative thinking.
